Six functions of lubricating oil

Although the main function of engine oil is lubrication, it has been a number of roles, playing an important role in the working condition of the engine. If the lubricating oil loses its function, the engine will be seriously damaged.

1. lubrication

Maintenance personnel in the maintenance of the engine, sometimes found that the piston skirt has a strain phenomenon, or found that the cylinder wall surface wear is serious, why does this phenomenon occur?

When the engine is working at a high speed, the piston and the cylinder wall, the connecting rod between the bushing and the crankshaft and other parts are closely matched, if these matching parts are not sufficiently lubricated, dry friction will occur. The heat generated by dry friction in a short period of time is enough to melt the metal, resulting in damage or even stuck parts (live cylinder, crankshaft tile, etc.), so it is necessary to give good lubrication to the matching parts of the engine.

When the lubricating oil flows to the matching part, an oil film will be formed on the friction surface. In order to ensure that the lubricating oil can reach the matching surface smoothly, the engine lubricating oil must have a certain pressure, when the lubricating oil pressure is insufficient, the oil pressure warning light on the instrument will be lit.

2. cleaning effect

The internal working environment of the engine is very bad. The dust and mixture of the engine that are inhaled through the intake system and not completely burned will form carbon deposits on the valve and cylinder wall. The lubricating oil is continuously oxidized inside the engine, and the oxides are also easy to form sludge and carbon deposits. Carbon accumulation has a great impact on the work of the engine, it not only affects the full combustion of the mixture, but also causes local overheating inside the engine, and a large number of gum will make the piston ring stick, resulting in the engine can not operate normally. Therefore, these dirt must be cleaned in time, and the cleaning process is completed by circulating the lubricating oil in the body. The lubricant contains a cleaning agent and dispersant to remove carbon deposits, which can clean the metal surface, disperse dirt, and keep the engine clean inside. When the lubricating oil is replaced, these impurities are discharged with the lubricating oil, so the lubricating oil will show a darker color.

3. sealing effect

There is a certain gap between the cylinder and the piston of the engine, the piston ring and the ring groove, the valve and the valve seat, so as to ensure that the movement between the mating parts will not be stuck, but these gaps are easy to cause the mixture of gas in the combustion chamber into the crankcase, which not only accelerates the deterioration of the lubricating oil, but also reduces the cylinder pressure and the output power of the engine. The lubricating oil can form an oil film in the gap between the mating parts, and these oil films can play a sealing role to ensure the tightness of the cylinder.

Maintenance personnel sometimes encounter low engine cylinder pressure, some people will add a small amount of lubricating oil to the engine through the spark plug hole, and then check the cylinder pressure, this method to help determine the fault is to use the sealing function of the lubricating oil.

4. Cooling effect

When the engine is working, it generates a lot of heat, most of which is taken away by the circulation of the engine cooling system, and some of which is sent to the oil pan after absorbing heat from the internal surface of the engine such as the cylinder and piston by the lubricating oil.

5. anti-rust effect

When the engine is running or parked, the water in the intake air and the acid gas generated by combustion will cause corrosion to the metal parts such as the piston ring and the bearing bush. Lubricating oil contains anti-rust agents and other multi-effect additives with anti-rust properties, which form a compact adsorption layer on the metal surface, effectively resisting the intrusion of various corrosive substances.

6. Buffer effect

When the engine starts, accelerates or the load changes greatly, the piston pin, the size end of the connecting rod and the crankshaft bearing shell and other components must withstand the drastic change of vibration, and the lubricating oil with appropriate viscosity can absorb part of the impact energy and play a buffer role.
